The Scrappiest Startup

Building a Marketing Function From Zero to Acquisition

0-1 GTM & Brand Building · B2B SaaS Marketing

Client: PorterLogic

In 2022, the Atlanta Startup Awards named PorterLogic its "Scrappiest Startup." It wasn't a backhanded compliment. It was the whole strategy. A handful of people building supply chain software with no marketing department yet had to look, sound, and show up like they belonged next to companies ten times their size. Three years later, PorterLogic was acquired.

MK joined before PorterLogic had a marketing function, a brand, or — in the earliest days — even a full product.

She came on as embedded/fractional head of marketing at the very beginning. Over four years, the role evolved alongside the company: 0-1 positioning and messaging for a pre-launch startup, then the scrappy, resourceful marketing a bootstrapped team runs on before institutional funding, then the more built-out brand, PR, and campaign work that came after PorterLogic closed its first venture round. That arc ended with PorterLogic's acquisition by Lucasys in March 2025.

PorterLogic's product was genuinely technical — and technical isn't what sells a supply chain director on a Tuesday.

A low-code, composable workflow engine that could replace a stack of spreadsheets and expensive ERP customizations needed translating into outcomes people in warehouses and procurement offices actually cared about: hours back in their week, fewer stockouts, a cheaper path than another ERP overhaul. That translation shows up directly in the case study titles that became PorterLogic's core proof: reclaiming 7+ hours a week for Hungryroot, protecting yield and margins for Thistle, cutting the cost of an ERP upgrade for AmeriLux, a 162% ROI with a 4.5-month breakeven for a $350M ecommerce retailer.
